Akron, N.Y. – April 30, 2013 – Imagine working for an ice cream company for the better part of your life and never being able to enjoy a cone or dish without discomfort.  John Rogers, direct store delivery leader with 40 years of service at Perry’s has struggled with lactose intolerance for the past 30 years.  “I love ice cream, the problem is, ice cream doesn’t love me, “said Rogers.

Rogers is among the estimated 30 to 50 million Americans who are lactose intolerant, according to the National Dairy Council.  Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and milk-derived dairy products.  Lactose intolerant individuals have insufficient levels of the lactase enzyme that changes lactose into glucose and galactose in their digestive system.  Additionally, a survey of 400 Perry’s consumers revealed that 19% of respondents are either lactose intolerant or have a family member who is.  54% of these respondents are interested in Lactose-Free products.

Perry’s Premium Lactose Free Vanilla ice cream assures no compromise in taste, what sets the product apart from regular Premium Vanilla is the absence of lactose.  After the mix is created, Perry’s adds a lactase enzyme that breaks down the lactose over 48 hours.  The product boasts the flavor and creaminess you expect from Perry’s.

Rogers is extremely pleased that Perry’s has launched a product that fits his health needs, similar to Perry’s No Sugar Added line for those who are diabetic or need to reduce their sugar intake. He is typically reluctant to switch his favorite dairy products to lactose free for fear of compromised flavor and quality.  However, Rogers’ reaction to sampling the product is simple, “Whoa, I can’t believe it’s this good!”

Lactose Free Vanilla: we bet if you let your friends and family try this vanilla without telling them it is lactose free, they wouldn’t be able to guess! It was a favorite of many Perry’s team members at our annual company meeting, and you simply have to try it! It makes sense for us to be so confident you’ll like it, since the only difference between our regular premium vanilla and our premium lactose free vanilla is the absence of lactose.

This year we have asked our Perry’s fans on Facebook to nominate the flavors to the playoffs. The 2013 bracket is a true representation of the nominations – the more votes a flavor received, the higher it ranked. Flavors then were grouped into two conferences: Chocolate and Vanilla. Match-ups were scheduled according to flavor rankings.

You may not have noticed, but at Perry’s we’ve tried to make finding your favorite product easier. How did we do this? We’ve color-coded the package! Below is a simple guide to help you decode the different offerings.

Perry’s signature premium ice cream is in a black package. For seasonal or special offerings, sometimes we add some extra details (like pumpkins on Pumpkin Pie) but the background is black.

Extra tidbit: Perry’s was the first to use a black carton in the ice cream category!

The only exception is for our specialty flavor with the Buffalo Sabres, Top Shelf Sundae. It is blue and gold, of course!

Perry’s all-natural premium ice cream is our newest package, with a light brown textured background.

Perfectly Churned™ light ice cream has a yellow gold background with a churned swirl.

Light no sugar added ice cream is in a deep blue package. A scroll on the package also calls out the vitamins, sugar content, and fat content in the product!

Perry’s frozen yogurt has a deep magenta package. Like the light no sugar added ice cream, this package has a handy scroll that lists all the vitamins in the product!

Last but, not least, sherbet is in a white package with light blue accents.

Hopefully this guide will help you find your favorite product the next time you visit the ice cream aisle. And if you accidentally grab the wrong item, we guarantee it will still taste great!

This new Perry’s flavor of light cinnamon ice cream with cinnamon graham swirls is a perfect pairing to anything baked. It is also quite delicious on its own.

1. Pumpkin Pie Puffs

You will need:

• Perry’s Pumpkin Pie
• Puffs empty shells (you can buy them already baked at a Wegmans bakery department)

Instructions:

• Temper the ice cream by putting it out on the counter for a couple minutes before scooping
• Cut the tops off the puffs
• Scoop the ice cream into the puffs and cover with tops of the puffs
• Place on a tray and return to a freezer (cover the puffs with plastic wrap)
• Add whipped cream on top before serving

2. Double Apple Pie

You will surprise your family and guests with not your usual Vanilla on the side of the Apple Pie. Serve Apple Pie (or Pumpkin Pie) ice cream!

3. Stuffed Apples

You will need:

• Perry’s Apple Pie Ice Cream
• Caramel Sauce
• Large Apples
• Pecans and/or walnuts to sprinkle on top

Instructions:

• Scoop out top and middle of large apples
• Scoop Apple Pie ice cream into apples
• Freeze the apples until ready to serve
• Before serving drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle with nuts

4. Apple Pie Milkshake

It is about time you meet Nina!  Nina is a part of our Inside Scoopers program, trusted with testing new and exciting Perry’s flavors. Nina is quite the expert foodie in the Greater Buffalo (home to Perry’s Ice Cream). Visit Nina’s blog on any given day and you are guaranteed to be inspired to cook, or, at the very least, you will grow hungry. Additionally to a very serious hobby of food blogging and cooking, “on the side” Nina writes about food at Buffalo Spree Magazine.

Perry’s Inside Scoopers Program: Apple Pie & Pumpkin Pie Ice Creams

Now that autumn is here in full force, countless wonderful desserts come to mind to match this season. Sweets featuring apples and pumpkins, as well as pies, are an important part of my fall and holiday dessert making and eating. While ice cream may not be among the first desserts I think of when it comes to this time of year, Perry’s has a couple decidedly autumnal varieties to expand the list to include tasty frozen treats. I’m fortunate to be a member of Perry’s Inside Scoopers program, and I have been trying new products by a special invitation from Perry’s.

Perry’s recently released apple pie as its newest ice cream flavor, which features apple ice cream with pecan swirls and cinnamon pie crust pieces. The makers certainly achieved all the classic elements of apple pie, especially its spices. The crunchy crust even tastes like real pie crust. There is also pumpkin pie, which is a combination of pumpkin ice cream, swirls of whipped cream ice cream and pie crust pieces. The spices aren’t as dominant as the apple pie flavor, but they’re quite flavorful nonetheless. Both are in stores from October through December.

When I recently brought these flavors to a family party, everyone agreed that the ice creams tasted much more authentic and reminiscent of pies than they could have imagined. Naturally, I wondered which was everyone’s pick for best fall flavor. The room was somewhat split on their favorite, but I believe apple pie won by a person or two.

Note: If you have a family member or friend with an allergy to tree nuts, both contain nuts. The apple pie ice cream has pecans in it and the pumpkin pie ice cream has coconut in it.

Give them a try and let me know what you think. They’re a great conversation piece for fall parties too.

Once you’ve sampled these, there is a flavor with a wintry feeling to keep an eye out for. The next logical holiday themed flavor following these two is peppermint stick. If you’re a fan of mint ice cream, that seems like a must!
