In 1918, broom maker Morton Perry purchased a very small dairy in Akron, New York. When Akron High School asked Morton if he could supply ice cream to the school, he was excited about the prospect of growing his fledgling company in the midst of the Great Depression. Morton, with the help of his son Marlo, began making small batches of ice cream mix on his kitchen stove, using a recipe his mother gave him. The school purchased all of the ice cream the Perrys could make. Once word got out about Morton’s delicious ice cream, his patrons grew and a great company was born.
Through the years, Perry’s Ice Cream continued to progress in product innovation and in size. In the early 1950s, Perry’s was one of the first ice cream companies to package ice cream in a round pint container. By 1970, overwhelming demand for Perry’s Ice Cream required a new storage freezer built on 8.5 acres of land in the Village of Akron. As the company continued to grow, it expanded that facility and, by 1982, had moved the entire production, storage and offices to its current home at One Ice Cream Plaza.
Today, Perry’s tradition of excellence continues as a new generation of Perrys leads the company. Perry’s values are still rooted in creating the best quality products while keeping in mind its humble beginnings — bringing dedicated customers the most delicious flavors and varieties to make all of life’s moments even better.
