Perry’s Ice Cream and The Buffalo Zoo Educate Visitors on Carbon Footprint Reduction

Akron, N.Y. – April 22, 2016 – Perry’s Ice Cream, a fourth generation, family owned ice cream company headquartered in Buffalo, celebrates Earth Day with a recommitment in partnership to the Buffalo Zoo.  Perry’s is the “official ice cream” of the zoo and sponsor of the Arctic Conservation and Interpretive Center’s Personal Carbon Footprint Area.

The Arctic Conservation and Interpretive Center is part of the zoo’s 1.5 acre Arctic Edge exhibit, home to Buffalo’s beloved polar bears, Eurasian lynx, American bald eagles, and coming soon, grey foxes.  The center’s purpose is to educate visitors in an interactive way about how climate change affects polar bears in the wild, and encourage them to change their habits to reduce global warming.

“A core tenant of our mission is to educate our guests and the community about the importance of environmental sustainability.  To have a partner like Perry’s Ice Cream who also shares in this mission, is appreciated and of great importance to the Buffalo Zoo,” noted Donna M. Fernandes, Ph.D., president and chief executive officer of the Buffalo Zoo.

Pride in our region is Perry’s tradition. The Buffalo-based company, who has been crafting premium ice cream for 84 years, works with local suppliers and farmers whenever possible, as nearly 100% of their dairy comes from farms within 50 miles.

“Our long-standing commitment to sustainable business practices allows us the opportunity to continue to give back to our community in proportion to our footprint,” commented Brian Perry, executive vice president and vice chair, Perry’s Ice Cream.

“Supporting family-centric organizations such as the Buffalo Zoo is core to our belief in being a good neighbor. Perry’s is a 10-year plus partner of the zoo and this opportunity aligns perfectly with our vision to educate the next generation about reducing their carbon footprint in an engaging and fun environment,” said Gayle Perry Denning, director of sustainability, Perry’s Ice Cream.

Arctic Edge is open during regular zoo hours, and free to visit with regular zoo admission. For more information, visit www.buffalozoo.org or call (716) 837-3900.

In addition, Perry’s was honored this past week by The Erie County Legislature for its sustainability efforts in “hopes that all local businesses will continue to do their part to protect the environment.” The company also hosted its 2nd annual “Good Stuff” celebration for team members throughout the month of April to highlight its sustainability efforts across the organization.  Named in honor of Perry’s founder, H. Morton Perry, who was known for his motto, “Make sure you put in enough of the ‘good stuff’”. The company stands by this statement almost 100 years and four generations later from its products to its people and the environment.
