Perry’s Ice Cream Introduces Otto’s Cupcake

Akron, N.Y. – January 20, 2014 – The wait is over! Otto’s Cupcake Ice Cream is now also available in Tops Markets and soon to come to other grocery stores selling Perry’s Ice Cream. This flavor was launched last fall, and was available only at the Syracuse University Dome and at the few ice cream stands that are open during the winter months.

The flavor named after the S.U. team mascot, Otto, was developed by Eilish Mitchell ‘12, Syracuse University graduate who works for Perry’s Ice Cream in the Quality Assurance and Research & Development Department. Avid supporter of the Orange, Eilish was thrilled when she heard that there was a need to develop a flavor for S.U. Athletics. “I knew that the flavor would have to have orange in it, but orange ice cream isn’t really a popular flavor,” says Mitchell. She tried and tried, and finally, she struck gold: “Chocolate cupcakes with orange frosting!” The flavor got team buy-in really quickly and will now be enjoyed by Orange fans everywhere Perry’s Ice Cream is sold.

This chocolate cupcake ice cream with orange colored frosting swirls and chocolate cupcake pieces not only delights all your senses, but it is also proof of the Perry family’s long-standing commitment to supporting college sports and the communities it serves. The product boasts the flavor and creaminess you expect from Perry’s and was very well received by S.U. fans and consumers alike. Through its affiliation with Syracuse University Athletics, Tops Markets is the first grocery chain to carry Otto’s Cupcake, with other fine retailers such as Wegmans, Price Chopper, and Olean Wholesale following suit shortly thereafter.

Consumers can scoop up Otto’s Cupcake at the S.U. Carrier Dome, independent ice cream stands, and retail locations across New York State, Western Pennsylvania, Northeastern Ohio, Vermont and Virginia.

In addition to Otto’s Cupcake, Perry’s has introduced a few new flavors, with more to come as the new season kicks off:

  • Perry’s Ice Cream Celebrates Its 95th Anniversary

It was 1918 when H. Morton Perry learned troubling news from his doctor – he was to to give up his career as a broom maker, since he had become allergic to something in the broom making process. Morton wasn’t a man that would be troubled with such news. Soon enough he found another career path. On November 13, 1918 H. Morton Perry signed a deed that made him the owner of a horse, a wagon, a milk route and some milk bottling equipment. And the rest is history!

Thank You for the 95 Years of Perry's!
Thank You for the 95 Years of Perry’s!

This week our Perry’s Ice Cream family celebrates 95 years of craftsmanship and service, and 95 years of community support – there certainly would not be Perry’s Ice Cream today if generation after generation of Western New Yorkers and Northern Pennsylvanians wouldn’t have chosen Perry’s as their preferred brand of ice cream.

During this special celebratory week we are remembering our heritage through a special photo gallery that will take you to to certain milestones in our 95 year history.

You also have a chance to win some Perry’s with one condition – you must demonstrate your Perry’s Ice Cream knowledge. We are posting a question a day on our Facebook and Twitter pages, and every correct comment gives you a chance to win. The more answers you guess correctly, the more chances you have to win, with the top award being the special prize of one year’s supply of Perry’s.

More than anything this week we would like to thank you – our consumers and customers – for making the 95 years possible. With a great team here are Perry’s, who helped us along the way, we are gearing up for at least another 95 years!

Please join us in this celebration though the above activities and good luck with the trivia!

  • Perry’s Ice Cream Celebrates 95 Years with Limited Edition Anniversary Flavor

Introducing the WNY Favorite, Sponge Candy Ice Cream to Retail

Akron, N.Y. – October 1, 2013 – In honor of its 95th year in business, Perry’s Ice Cream is celebrating with the release of a limited edition anniversary flavor fitting of its hometown in Western New York, Sponge Candy.

Sponge Candy is caramel sugar flavored ice cream with caramelized sugar swirls and sponge candy pieces.  Similar to the chicken wing, sponge candy has a cult-like following among Buffalonians. “This summer we introduced Sponge Candy at our ice cream stands and the consumer response has been tremendous,” said Bob Denning, president and chief executive officer. “When we began discussing a 95th flavor, Sponge Candy was the top choice to honor both four generations of ice cream craftsmanship and our community that has supported us for almost a century.”

Perry's Ice Cream Limited Edition 95th Anniversary Sponge Candy

Perry’s humble beginnings date back to 1918, a time when H. Morton Perry, a broom maker by trade, seized his American dream by purchasing a horse-drawn milk route in the village of Akron.  On his first day of business, Morton delivered 29 gallons of farm fresh milk to the homes of his new customers.

During the Great Depression, Morton was asked by the cafeteria manager at Akron Central School to supply ice cream to the children as a treat. Morton responded with his usual eagerness and entrepreneurial spirit.  The first batch of Perry’s Ice Cream was cooked on the kitchen stove using his mother’s family recipe.  Morton, with the help of his 17 year-old son Marlo, would freeze the mix in a hand-churned ice and salt freezer. Marlo would deliver it when he went to school the next day.

“You never know until after it happens, that moment that will create your legacy,” said Brian Perry, executive vice president, vice chair and fourth generation Perry family member.  “For my great-grandfather that moment there at the kitchen stove would come to define who we are, even in today’s fast paced business world. He is known for saying “make sure we put enough of the ‘good’ stuff” in our products.  95 years later, that is still our company and my family’s promise for everything we do.”

As demand grew, Morton applied the same principles that made his milk sales successful.  He increased his production capacity from the two gallon hand-churned freezer to an electric five gallon batch freezer and began to deliver ice cream to local stores, restaurants and schools, offering exceptional service.

Today, Perry’s is one of the largest ice cream producers in New York State, led by the fourth generation of the Perry family. With over 330 associates they make approximately 500 different items totaling over 12 million gallons per year. Perry’s matchless products, based on the family recipe from H. Morton Perry’s mother, are still made the old-fashioned way – slow cooked to creamy perfection.  Fresh local dairy products and the finest ingredients are sourced for all Perry’s Ice Cream products.

Sponge Candy is now available in your grocer’s freezer section in locations across New York State, Western Pennsylvania, Northeastern Ohio, Vermont and Virginia.

Perry’s is offering a $1.00 off any 1.50 qts. retail carton via their Facebook page.  Click the link here (http://a.pgtb.me/lmjj9j) to access the coupon.

  • And the New 2013 Flavors Are…

It’s Time to Drop by Your Local Ice Cream Stand… Perry’s new 2013 flavors have arrived!!!

Lactose Free Vanilla: we bet if you let your friends and family try this vanilla without telling them it is lactose free, they wouldn’t be able to guess! It was a favorite of many Perry’s team members at our annual company meeting, and you simply have to try it! It makes sense for us to be so confident you’ll like it, since the only difference between our regular premium vanilla and our premium lactose free vanilla is the absence of lactose.

Needless to say, this flavor is BIG NEWS for those who are lactose intolerant – trips to an ice cream stand are equal opportunity for all from now on!

Sponge Candy: caramel sugar flavored ice cream with caramelized sugar swirls and sponge candy pieces.

Ice cream stands that  have already opened for the season, like Green Acres Ice Cream2 Scoops Ice CreamFrosty’s Ice Cream couldn’t keep this Buffalo-inspired flavor in stock and have to asked for urgent additional delivery. Need we say more?

Movie Time: Popcorn flavored ice cream with sea salt caramel swirls and caramel truffles.  Try it and you’ll see why this flavor was named 2013’s “Most Innovative” by the International Dairy Foods Association (aka the trusted authority on all things ice cream).

Fair warning: make sure you have time to see a movie after you try this flavor. We don’t think you’ll be able to fight the temptation!

Oh My, Cherry Pie! Vanilla ice cream with cherry and graham cracker swirls.

What can be better than a homemade cherry pie? Our answer is: cherry pie ala mode, served chilled, in an ice cream cone.

Queen Of Hearts: Dark chocolate ice cream with raspberry swirls and fudge filled hearts.

An ultimate indulgence! Let’s just say we are quite confident that dark chocolate lovers will really enjoy this flavor.

You will be able to find all of these new flavors at ice cream stands that have already opened for the season.  An easy way to find any flavor nearby is by using our flavor finder tool: https://dev-perrys-ice-cream.pantheonsite.io/where-to-buy/. • Grape Pie with Perry’s Vanilla Ice Cream by Foodie with Family

Meet Rebecca. Rebecca is “a freelance food writer, cooking teacher, recipe developer, self-employed baker and cheesecake artist, occasional caterer, mother of five perpetually hungry boys and wife of her biggest culinary fan”. Recently Rebecca added another title to her long list: Perry’s Ice Cream Inside Scooper, agreeing to share scoops of Perry’s with her family and friends and, once in a while, her thoughts on our flavors via her wonderful blog – Foodie with Family.

Our favorite feature on Rebecca’s blog is Make Ahead Mondays. To our delight Rebecca decided to serve her Make Ahead Mondays Grape Pie  alongside Perry’s Vanilla. From our completely biased view – they make a perfect match! Overall, it feels like a pie kind of time at Perry’s: Apple Pie, Pumpkin Pie and now, Grape Pie! Enjoy!

Grape Pie Filling and Grape Pie

    by Foodie with Family

    Ingredients

    For the Pie Filling:
      • 22 cups Concord grapes, washed
      • 4 cups granulated sugar
      • 1/4 cup lemon juice (or 1 teaspoon citric acid)
      • 1 cup ClearJel starch (or another brand of the same type of starch)
    For the Grape Pie:
    • 1 quart of grape pie filling
    • Pie pastry for a double crust
    • 1 egg, beaten
    • raw sugar or granulated sugar for sprinkling over the crust, optional

    Instructions

To Prepare and Can Grape Pie Filling:

Working over two pots, take a grape in each hand and gently squeeze it over the first pot. Deposit the grape skins in the second pot. Continue until you have separated all of the grape pulps from the grape skins.

Place the pot with the grape pulps (do not add water!) over medium heat and bring to a boil, stirring frequently, allowing it to boil for 5 to 6 minutes. Put the hot pulp through a food mill or pour it through a colander, pressing to get as much pulp through as possible. Pour the hot, sieved pulp over the reserved grape skins.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the sugar and ClearJel (and citric acid, if using.) Sprinkle over the grape pulp mixture and use a big whisk or sturdy spoon to mix in thoroughly. Put the pot over medium heat, and bring to a boil, stirring constantly, until thick. It should thicken quickly, but it does still need to be bubbling before you can put it in jars.

Place a canning funnel -for neatness’ sake- over the opening of a clean, sterilized quart jar and ladle in the hot pie filling leaving 1-inch of headspace. For help on learning how to sterilize your jars, click this link Moisten a paper towel and wipe the rims of the jars so they are spotless. Center a new lid on the jar and screw the ring in place until fingertip-tight.

Place the jars in a canning pot, ensure they are completely covered with water, bring to a boil and process for 30 minutes. When the 30 minutes are up, turn off the heat, remove the canner lid and let the jars rest for 5 minutes before carefully transferring to a cooling rack or a towel on the counter. Let cool, undisturbed, overnight before removing rings, wiping clean and labeling. Store the jars in a cool, dark place for up to two years.

    To Make the Grape Pie:

Preheat oven to 425°F. Roll out half of the pie pastry and lay it gently in the pie plate so that it covers the whole plate and drapes a little outside of the top, too. Pour the jar of grape pie filling into the crust and spread it with a spatula. Roll out the second crust to just slightly larger than the circumference of the top of the pie plate. Lay it on top of the pie filling and gather the excess pastry, folding it under to form a neat edge. Crimp with a fork or whatever style you prefer, cut a few vent holes in whatever shapes you like.

Brush the pastry with the beaten egg and then sprinkle generously with the sugar, if using. This creates a deeper coloured crust and a little bit of sparkle.

Bake for 15 minutes, then lower the temperature to 350°F and continue baking for another 30-40 minutes, or until the crust is deep brown and the filling is bubbly. If you find the crust is browning too quickly, you can gently crimp foil around the outside edge to protect the edges.

Carefully transfer the pie plate to a cooling rack and let cool completely -if ever you can make yourself wait- before slicing. The filling will still slump out, but may hold together a bit better if you let it cool first.

For the ultimate Western New York experience, serve each slice of pie with a scoop of Perry’s Vanilla Ice Cream on top.

Store leftovers tightly covered at room temperature for up to 3 days.

    Frozen S’mores

by Ashley of Wishes and Dishes

Ice cream is one of my favorite foods…..period.  Peanut butter is one of my favorite things in ice cream…..period.  A few months ago, I discovered my new obsession at a place I love to get ice cream in the summer, Lugia’s.  This obsession is otherwise known as Perry’s Peanut Butter Chip Frozen Yogurt.  On second thought, I know my hubby is going to want credit for this one as he was the original person to make the ground-breaking discovery and order this little taste of heaven.

Lugia’s serves in my estimate, about 700 different flavors of ice cream and frozen yogurt (I could be a little over), which I love.  You order a size small ice cream and you practically get an entire bucket of ice cream!  Normally you have to stand in line for a while at the outdoor walk-up counter, which is okay, because the large flavor menu board makes hasty decision making pretty much impossible….and we all know I am horrible at making prompt decisions, as previously discussed last week in this post

A couple of months ago, I was grocery shopping and I moseyed on over to the ice cream section (surprising, I know) and found that they now carried the frozen yogurt flavor that I so love!  Those of you in New York, Pennsylvania or Ohio should definitely be on the lookout for this frozen yogurt at your local supermarket or ice cream stand.  So, naturally, ever since that discovery I don’t think a day has gone by where I didn’t have some sitting in my freezer.  If you are lucky enough to have a Wegman’s nearby, there is a good chance they will carry it.  That is, of course, as long as you don’t shop at the same Wegman’s that I do, in which case I will have probably cleaned out the entire stock by the time you get there.  If you don’t live in the area, just go pick up a 1.5 qt container of your favorite frozen treat to use as a substitute.  And remember folks……. frozen yogurt typically has about 1/3 of the amount of fat present in a equal serving of regular ice cream, so you can eat three times more frozen yogurt than you would ice cream and still feel good about yourself

So what’s a girl to do but to get a little creative and make a summery sweet treat with all that frozen yogurt?   Meet this frozen s’mores treat.  It’s a beautiful thing.

    Photo via Wishes and Dishes

    INGREDIENTS:

(Makes 1 frozen sandwich…make as many as you want!)

    1 full honey graham cracker

    1 tablespoon marshmallow cream/fluff

½ tablespoon mini semi sweet chocolate chips

*2 tablespoons Perry’s Peanut Butter Chip Frozen Yogurt (frozen solid)

*You can use your favorite flavor of ice cream or frozen yogurt!

    DIRECTIONS:

    1. Break one graham cracker in half.  Spread one half with 1 tablespoon marshmallow cream and sprinkle with 1 teaspoon mini chocolate chips on top of the cream.
    2. Top other half with 2 tablespoons frozen yogurt and place marshmallow side in, on top of frozen yogurt, to create a sandwich. Using a dull knife, wipe the sides clean.  By hand, place a a good amount of chips on each side.
    3. Place on a plate and freezer. Freeze until firm, before serving.

If making several at once, keep frozen yogurt or ice cream in freezer and follow step 1 with as many as you desire to make.  Next, follow steps 2 and 3.

Place each, unwrapped, on a plate in freezer.  Once frozen, wrap each sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and keep stored in freezer.

They’ll keep in freezer for several weeks if wrapped well!
